Margaret Olley

Flannel Flowers 1975

Lot 24

For anyone who delights in richly sumptuos colour, Margaret Olley's still life paintings rarely disappoint. This one draws us from a foreground arrangement of vases, flowers, a bowl and milk jug toward the indigo depths of a darkened window. The lighter hued flowers stand out against the window to create an illusion of celestial objects in the evening sky. As a balancing influence, the foreground bowl contains onions which reference soil, or the weight of earth beneath us. This work is further described as a meditative contemplation on the loss of her closest friend, the painter David Strachan. Auction estimate (AU $45,000 - $55,000).
